Here's my entry for the 'silhouette' contest held by :icongingerkellystudio: It was created using felt tips and fine-liners.
Originally inspired by Vania Zouravliov's silhouette work (a stunning artist I would highly recommend), as well as carrying on the kind of work I did for my final major project for my Foundation art degree last year. It incorporates lots of different symbols and archetypes from traditional folk and fairytales from all over the world. I didn't want to just pile together a load of animals and objects so I got a book on symbolism out from the library and looked up which symbols would be most appropriate, and tried to place them in context and use their meanings to build up an image that represented the dark undertones and symbolism within fairytales. Hope that at least comes across a little :)

Hi, im an art student working on a silouhette for my art class. I loved your piece and it was so cool how you incorporated so many different fairy tales. I was just wondering how you got so much detail in and how you did this. Would you happen to have any pointers for me at all?

Thanks so much :) I'm not sure how useful I could be but I'll have a go at describing my process anyway and hopefully you can get something from it.
Initially I spent a while on just planning out what I wanted to include by researching recurring imagery in fairytales and folklore and then reading up on their associated symbolism to work out how I wanted them to interact with each other within the image. I managed to fit in so many details by sketching out the composition first in pencil, and then once I was happy with the layout and the spacing and had included everything I wanted, went over it all in pen.
Vania Zouravliov does some really beautiful, crowded silhouettes full of hidden details, his work was the main inspiration behind this piece actually. Maybe you'd like to look him up :)
Sorry for the essay, hah, I hope I was able to provide something at least a little helpful. Good luck with your work, and sorry it took me a while to reply.

No problem and thank you, it really did help. See my cuttings are going to be done in a encyclopedia. So technically its going to almost be like a pop-up but not quite. But the information you gave me helped, and I will make sure I look that artist up. Thank you again!!

This is truly beautiful. I love the spinning wheel with the thread spider-webbing up to the branches and the cat with the mouse and the girl with ... a lamb, I think? Or a baby goat?
